Turquoise Beaches of TranquilityFriendly People and Beautiful Beaches - Just Where You Want to BeLooking for an unspoiled beach in the Caribbean? Not looking to spend a fortune on a private island? If such is the case, then look no further than Vieques Island.
Located about 8 miles off of the southeast coast of Puerto Rico, this island was for years under the control of the United States Navy. Since 2003, when the military left the island, Vieques has grown in popularity for its amazingly beautiful blue and turquoise beaches set against rolling hills covered in lush green flora. Now, visitors arrive by ferry, or by flight from San Juan. Rich in Culture and BiodiversityVieques Island has everything one could want out of the Caribbean. Peace and tranquility make up the recipe for the perfect vacation, and they are also specialties of the island. Although in recent years Vieques has seen an increase in tourism, the island is still fairly secluded. The white sandy beaches, world class food and comfortable accommodations provide the perfect setting for a more secluded Caribbean vacation. The people of Vieques are friendly, and lead a laid-back, island life. The island is also rich in history; it is home to Count Mirasol Fort, the last Spanish fort built in the Americas, which now serves as a museum. One of the most extraordinary places to visit on Vieques Island is the Bioluminescent Bay, one of the world’s largest and brightest bioluminescent bays in the world. The red mangrove trees that surround the bay, combined with cool, deep water and the lack of development in area combine to make this one of the best places to view the luminescence caused by glowing blue micro-organisms. Swimming and kayaking in the bay are a great way to enjoy this amazing sight. A Variety of Beaches and Festivals to Choose FromSome of the best beaches on Vieques Island include Playa Esperanza and Sun Bay Beach. Exploring the waters, hiking, bicycling and horseback riding are some of the main activities to enjoy here. In addition, exploring some of the history of the island leads you to places like the Old Nayda Cinemar Theater, the Punta Mulas Lightouse, and the tomb of Le Guillou, the founder of the island. For those who are looking for a little excitement to accompany the tranquility of Vieques Island, visiting during festival celebrations is the perfect solution. In April the island celebrates its Cultural Festival, in December Matron Celebrations are held, and in the month of November both the Bilí and Arepa Festivals are enjoyed. Visit Vieques Island as soon as possible to enjoy its appeal as an unspoiled Caribbean destination; with each passing day it grows in popularity.
